Chapter 35

The next morning Snake arrived at the clubhouse before the sun came up. He was not at all happy. His crew had found Noah twice but couldn’t take care of business either time. This was not the normal scenario for the Ninth Avenue Posse. Usually, they did what they wanted, when they wanted and worried about repercussions afterward, but this was a bit different. Noah was not involved with drugs or any gang or criminal activity. If he were killed, suspicion would be raised, and a complete police investigation would be done. So the gang needed to be smart and only make calculated moves.

He had breakfast delivered from the corner bodega and sat at the bar and watched the local morning news while he ate.

After a while, Sarah came in to start her daily shift. Since gangs didn’t work regular business hours, the bar didn’t keep them either. She came to work each morning shortly after sunrise and stayed until she had to leave due to another life commitment or until she was just too tired to stay any longer.

“Good morning, Snake. How are things?”

“Morning, Sarah. They are how they are. We caught up with Noah a couple of times yesterday but couldn’t snatch him up. Too many witnesses.”

“Snake, I’m going to ask you a favor. I’m aware of what he did and how your mindset goes. I would really rather you not use the information I gave you, to hurt him. I also understand the request will probably fall on deaf ears. I get that, but can I ask you not to include me in any further conversations about him? I feel bad and would rather have no knowledge of anything that has to do with your dealings with him.”

“Sure thing, Sarah. I understand. Hey, I wanted to watch WPIX Channel 11 news, but I can’t find the remote. Any idea where it is?”

“Yes, I keep it in this drawer right here. If I leave it on the bar, someone always drops it, breaks it, or takes it home. I don’t let anyone use it anymore. If someone wants to change the channel, I just do it for them.” She took out the remote, changed the channel, and started to go about her morning duties.

“Listen, Sarah. I’m sorry you got put into this position. I won’t bring him up anymore if you’re around. I respect what you did for the gang, and I realize why you did it. I understand how you were torn on what to do. It makes perfect sense. I’m also glad you have your priorities where they should be, so I’ll honor your request the best I can. Again, I’m sorry you got in the middle of all this.”

“No problem, Snake. Please understand I mean no disrespect to you. I just don’t feel great about what I did. I would do it again if it helped the gang, but that doesn’t mean I have a warm and fuzzy feeling about it. Thank you for understanding.
